  • Press release: DoD High Level Architecture (HLA) baseline approved, 9/17/96. Initial definition of this modeling and simulation High Level Architecture was sponsored by DARPA.
  • Press release: DARPA announces funding for four MARITECH projects, 8/14/96. Note: In the second paragraph of this release, there is an error. The third company of the Virtual Shipbuilding Consortium, listed in the release as "American Management Enterprises," should be listed as "Advanced Marine Enterprises." We regret the error.

  • ARPA becomes DARPA: Public Law 104-106, under Title IX of the FY 96 Defense Authorization Act, directed an organizational name change for this agency. Effective immediately, the Advanced Research Projects Agency will be referred to as the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. The abbreviation "DARPA" will be used in place of the abbreviation "ARPA." P.L. 104-106 was signed into law in February 1996.
